Update (April 11, 11.30 a.m.): MLB officially announced Tuesday that the Rockies will host the 91st Midsummer Classic on July 13th. The following is the story of Monday night.

The 2021 MLB All-Star game is coming to Colorado, a league source confirmed Monday night.

Just days after Major League Baseball decided to move the game from Atlanta, MLB is expected to officially announce Tuesday morning that the game will be moved to Coors Field in Denver on July 13.

“We are excited about the opportunity to host the All-Star Game and await MLB’s decision,” said Denver Mayor Michael Hancock in a statement made Monday evening to the Denver Post.

Governor Jared Polis reiterated Hancock’s hopeful statements when contacted by The Post.

“Like so many Coloradans, I am excited and hopeful that Major League Baseball will make the best decision and officially go to the Denver All-Star Game in 2021,” Polis said in a statement. “It would be good for baseball and good for Colorado.”

It is currently unknown how many fans will be able to participate in the All-Star game. Currently, the Rockies are allowing 42.6% of Coors Field’s usual capacity of 50,144 fans in the stadium due to the coronavirus. Colorado state officials have announced that they will hand the decision on most of the COVID-19 public health restrictions to local authorities in mid-April – long before the July All-Star Game takes place.

The possibility of the All-Star game’s return to Colorado arose on Friday when MLB announced its intention to postpone the game in response to a new Georgia electoral law that raised concerns among civilian groups, allowing people of color to vote to restrict. The 2021 MLB draft, a new addition to the All-Star Game celebrations this year, has also been relocated from Atlanta.

Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement at the time that his decision to move the game from Atlanta was made after talks with individual players in the big leagues as well as the Players Alliance, a black player organization that was formed after the death of George Floyd Year in Minnesota.

Manfred said his decision was “the best way to demonstrate our values as a sport.”

Following Manfred’s decision, the Atlanta Braves issued a statement.

“The Atlanta Braves are deeply disappointed with Major League Baseball’s decision to postpone their 2021 All-Star Game.

“This was neither our decision nor our recommendation and we are sad that the fans cannot see this event in our city. The Braves organization will continue to emphasize the importance of equal choice and we were hoping that our city could use this event as a platform to improve the discussion. Our city has always been known as a unit in divided times, and we will miss the opportunity to address issues that are important to our community.

“Unfortunately, companies, employees and fans in Georgia are the victims of this decision. We will continue to support the community’s planned and ongoing legacy projects. “

The Rockies were a contestant for the 2022 All-Star Game before the Los Angeles Dodgers won. Major League Baseball officials made several visits to Denver this past spring. The other candidates for the 2022 Midsummer Classic were the Texas Rangers and the Chicago Cubs.

Denver last hosted the All-Star Game on July 7, 1998 for the fourth year of its existence at Coors Field. In a sold out crowd of 51,231 spectators, the American League beat the National League 13-8.

Seattle-based Ken Griffey Jr., who was voted into the All-Star Game by collecting the most votes from fans, won a memorable Home Run Derby the day before the All-Star Game. He hit a total of 19 homers, three in the finals, to defeat Cleveland’s Jim Thome.
