DENVER (AP) – A Colorado officer was shot in the leg and police started a search for the shooter.

Officers responded to a report from a person on a porch who didn’t belong on a Denver home late Saturday, department head Ron Thomas told reporters early Sunday.

The shooter opened fire on officers at the scene and one officer was shot in the leg, Thomas said. The officer was taken to the Denver Health Medical Center in critical condition.

The police were not immediately sure whether the suspect was in custody. Thomas said the officers had contacted several “people of interest” but the investigation was still ongoing.

In search of the suspect, the authorities set up a perimeter in the area of the shooting. Residents of the community northwest of downtown were encouraged to stay in their homes.

The search for police dogs ended and the area reopened to the public Sunday morning, the Denver Post reported.
