(CBS Miami / CBS Local) – For the second time in a little over a year, the House impeachment officers will be marching to the Capitol, where the Senate is considering whether to convict former President Donald Trump of high crimes and misdemeanors.

Democrats will need help to convict the former president, at least 17 Republican senators would have to side with their Democratic counterparts.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio appeared on Fox News and said to count him.

“First of all, I think the process is stupid. I find it counterproductive. We already have a burning fire in this country and it’s like taking a bundle of gasoline and pouring it on the fire, ”he said.

Senators will be officially sworn in as a jury on Monday, though the process doesn’t begin for two weeks to give both sides time to file pleadings and finalize legal strategies.

“I think the president is entitled to due process. I think he has the right to defend himself. I think he has the right to be there when needed to give testimony and evidence and you know the house didn’t have a lot of witnesses etc because they frankly rammed it through very quickly, ”said Rubio.

“The first chance I get to finish this process I will do because I think it’s really bad for America,” he added.

Rubio said the process will keep politicians from focusing on more important issues and make it harder to get things done in the future.

Former President Trump has described the upcoming trial as “the continuation of the greatest witch hunt in the history of politics”.
