(CBS4) – There is a new effort to have a mental health exam for Coloradans as regularly as a physical one. The hope is to help Coloradans identify and treat health problems before they become a crisis.
A Colorado bill would require insurers to cover an annual mental health review. If passed, it would be the first law of its kind in the country. Many people are struggling with their mental health due to the added stress and isolation of the pandemic. Now an attempt is made to normalize the conversation and make resources accessible.
Shane Still is a senior at the University of Colorado at Denver. In his thesis, he sheds light on the effects of the pandemic on people’s mental health through photography and audio storytelling every day.
“I’ve been working on this project since September so it’s surreal to see it on the wall,” Still said. “There are 31 days a month of Mental Health Awareness, so I thought it was the perfect time to share these 31 stories throughout the month.”
The 31 Days Denver project shares 31 people’s perspectives on mental health.
“All of these feelings that we have felt through the pandemic are universal,” said Andrea Flores of CBS4. “Depression, anxiety, PTSD, and loneliness are all factors that cause many mental health problems in the community.”
Former CU Denver schoolmate Jennie Boucneau shared her story of being an Asian American in fatal attacks on the Asian community.
“I think it really worked out there and I thought, oh my god, it happens, it still happens and it isn’t talked about,” said Boucneau.
“Finally people are starting to talk about it. It upset me, it made me sad, I was confused, I was in conflict, it was a whole range of different feelings that I had never felt before. “
During the 31 days in Denver, Shane hopes to not only share stories but also provide resources for those in need.
“It’s okay to be wrong and it’s okay to get help when you need it,” he said.
Sold 31 days ago Denver masks. Fifty percent of the proceeds go directly to local mental health organizations.
