PEOPLE, Colo. (CBS4) – Almost eight years after Kelsie Schelling’s disappearance, the opening speeches begin on Wednesday in her murder trial. Donthe Lucas was charged with murder, although her body was never found. Lucas pleaded not guilty to committing a first degree murder in August 2018.
When she disappeared in February 2013, Schelling was pregnant and reportedly traveled from Denver to Pueblo to speak to Lucas about it.
Messages on Schelling’s phone indicated that she texted Lucas that she was pregnant, and his replies showed that he was unhappy.
On the day she was reportedly missing, GPS on her phone indicated that it had driven to the same location in Pueblo as Lucas’ phone.
Police believe Lucas was the last person Schelling saw, and investigators said he withdrew $ 400 from their account that day.
Police found Schelling’s car in a Walmart parking lot in Pueblo a few days after it was reported missing.
In December 2020, Schelling’s mother spoke to KKTV, our news partner in Colorado Springs.
“I’ve been through so many different types of hell in the last nearly eight years, and I know they are [trial] is just going to be a different guy on another level, ”said Laura Saxton. “They know it’s something that needs to be done and taken care of, no matter how hard or difficult it is, we just have to get it done.”
