OAK CREEK, Colorado (CBS4) – A man accused of shooting three people in two different locations was shot dead by a citizen. Investigators believe that 46-year-old Steven Padilla shot and killed a man in an Oak Creek neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon – then drove a few blocks away and shot at an RV park.

The first gunfire was reported at 218 East Highland Street. The Routt County Sheriff’s Office says the victim was shot but not seriously injured.

Minutes later, investigators received reports of gunfire in the area of ​​201 Wild Hogg Drive. Investigators say Padilla fired shots outside of unit number 37 and then went inside.

Once inside, investigators say Padilla tried to shoot a man but his gun did not work properly. The man attacked Padilla – but Padilla managed to fire several more shots. The man was killed and a woman was wounded.

Then another man in the house got a gun and shot Padilla, killing him.

The injured woman was taken to hospital and is said to survive.

Late Thursday afternoon, Routt County’s undersheriff Doug Scherar confirmed that 24-year-old Dustyn River James was the man who was killed by Padilla at the second location. Friends created a GoFundMe page on Thursday asking for donations for James’ funeral expenses.

Oak Creek Police Department officers, detectives from the Routt County Sheriff’s Office, and investigators from the Colorado Bureau of Investigations are working on the case.
