DENVER (KDVR) – A Denver police officer was shot dead and rushed to hospital in the Sunnyside neighborhood on Saturday night.

According to the Denver Police Department, there is a large police presence on the 4400 block of Alcott Street where officers are searching for the suspect.

During an update at around 2:45 am, department head Ron Thomas said that a safe perimeter has been set up for several blocks in all directions and that people in the area should stay in their homes.

Thomas also said investigators do not know whether the shooting suspect is in custody or not.

There is a heavy police presence on the 4400 block of North Alcott St. # Denver officials are looking for a suspect involved in a shooting. A Denver officer was rushed to a local hospital with a gunshot wound in his leg. This is an active investigation.

The officer, whom Thomas identified as male, has been with DPD for about five years, was shot in the leg and is in critical condition in the hospital.

Sources tell FOX31 that the officer responded to an unauthorized call when they were shot dead.
