ESTES PARK, Colorado (CBS4) – It’s been a week since Rocky Mountain National Park launched its timed admission program, but many visitors to the popular park didn’t know about it. Hundreds of people were stuck in traffic on Saturday trying to get into Rocky Mountain National Park.
One of those people was Eddie, a biker from Julesburg.
“I came with my family. You’re in the back of the car and we came over to do some fishing and drive around the mountains and look at the beautiful scenery, ”he said.
It wasn’t a short drive from Colorado’s Eastern Plains to Estes Park.
“Oh, it took me about three and a half hours to get here,” Eddie said. Anyway, as soon as he stopped he had to bring the bad news to his family.
The park implemented a timed entry system that requires visitors to go online to make reservations to get inside. According to the park’s website, the system “distributes usage throughout the park in order to make better use of all parking spaces and starting points”.

The system is temporary and covers 75 to 85% of the park’s capacity on a daily basis. As it looked on Saturday, Eddie wasn’t the only one who didn’t know about it because cars were being turned around at the gate.
Eddie says he plans to return another time. Maybe before 9am or after 3pm if you don’t need a reservation to get into the park. The Bear Lake Road corridor will be closed during this time.
If you want to go there you have to wait until after 6pm
“I’m not too puzzled. I can turn around easily, but my grandchildren and family will be a little puzzled by it. “
